Shafipour House of Yazd

After strolling around the alleyways of historic old city of Yazd, we arrive at Shafipour House. This 150 year-old Qajarid house was founded by Mirza Shafi (the forefather of Shafipour family and the brother of Mortaz House founder).

The Main Part of Shafipour House

The Door of Shafipour House in Yazd has carved ring and hammer doorknockers. The entrance is located next to the smaller part of the house and the corridor along the small yard leads to the main courtyard of the house. The corridor partition has blocked direct view from the entrance to the main courtyard.
The main part of Shafipour House in Yazd is the large rectangle courtyard. On the northern, southern and western sides, there are only rooms facing the courtyard; however, on the eastern side there are two rows of rooms. The rooms on first row are the ones with a view of the courtyard and maids section is located behind these rooms on the second row. The main courtyard is surrounded by walls with the height of the two floors which serve no specific functions.

Marvelous Rooms of Shafipour House

 The second part of Shafipour House is a small house located in the north of the main building and in two floors. The courtyard of this section is in two levels, the lower level is smaller and serves as a garden for the higher level. The main interior spaces of the house are three panjdaris (rooms with five doors) and a room with sash windows. It's interesting to know that in terms of interior base and height, these rooms are almost the same size, and have similar ceilings. These rooms are all decorated with colorful plant designs. The quality of the interior architecture of these rooms is almost the same and gives the same atmosphere to these rooms. The ceilings of these rooms are covered with Kalil vault (an architectural term for Persian shallow arched ceilings), a central flat section and a curved marginal section. The ending of the marginal part connects the walls and the roof in a way that the upper parts of the wall seem to be connected to the roof, giving it a three-dimensional look.

Double Beauty of Shafipour’s Courtyard

The presence of a large room with sash windows in the southern facade and smaller rooms with sash windows in the upper floor has turned this magnificent house to one of the most beautiful traditional houses in Yazd. The rooms with sash windows have added wood to façade of Shafipour House bringing variety to the texture and color of the courtyard’s materials, and making the courtyard subtler and more intimate.
